Early Songs

Up and coming conductor Tomas Djupsjöbacka opens this programme with the iconic Overture from Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Berg’s seven early songs are a collection of subtle, lyrical pieces occupying middle ground between late Romanticism and atonality. They are performed here by Erica Back, rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after singers of her generation in Finland. After the interval, the evening concludes with Bruckner’s massive Fourth Symphony.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Overture from the opera The Magic Flute
Alban Berg: Sieben frühe Lieder
Anton Bruckner: Symphony no. 4 in E flat major WAB 104 ‘Romantic’

Tomas Djupsjöbacka, conductor
Erica Back, mezzo-soprano

Armas Järnefelt revisited

How was Armas Järnefelt's first composition concert in Vaasa in the year 1892? At that time, Järnefelt combined his own chambercompositions together with Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata, E minor, Op. 90 and Frédéric Chopin's Nocturne, c-sharp minor and Prelude, D minor. This summer we will hear an encore of the original concert during the Festival on Monday 29.7 at 18.00 in Vaasa City Hall with our artists, pianist Håvard Gimse, violinist Cecilia Zilliacus and mezzo-soprano Erica Back. Järnefelt's long lost Variatioonia will be performed perhaps for the first time since 1892!

Cecilia Zilliacus, violin

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827):

The composer J Francaix had a very good mood - even so good that no one thought he could write profound music. Lili Boulanger catches a bottomless melancholy while Wennäkoski creates art from ordinary things and neatly folds them together.
